Last Meeting: 5/12/2012. NEXT MEETING: 6/9/2012
at Debbie R's near Leicester - LASAGNA! DAYLILIES in bloom! See Calendar; CONTACT US (above right) for more info - directions, address, etc. HOSPITALITY (above right) for RSVP.
We took in about $2200 at the Arboretum tuber sale - Allen H. collected $25 from someone the day before, while setting up (We sometimes call these "Curb Sales" - we've had people buy tubers from the boxes while trying to load them to leave.) Allen H. & Susan K. netted $200 at the French Broad River Garden Club Sale on 5/5.
Allen H. & a couple of people (as well as Mike D. with the Mum Society plants) will be at the Arboretum on Tuesday with another sale; 5/19 Allen H. will be spearheading the Brevard Music Center's 2nd Annual Plant Sale - lots of plant varieties plus tubers. Mountain Garden Club (Ann M. one of our Highlands' members is our contact there) will be buying & selling some of our leftover tubers. If you are participating in any garden club or tailgate market and want to hawk our leftovers - let us know. (Don't break the tailgate market's rules though!)
At the April Members' Only Sale, when it looked like we were not going to have enough, we arranged to buy some - like we've done a couple of times in the past - we've used 6 different commercial growers over the years - never the same one twice.
But members managed to find tubers and we had the largest selection EVER :
Lori & Bob G. brought 350 size AA-BB (We've never had AA/A after about 10:30am before!)
Ken Z. (after cutting back his garden last year!) found about 140 tubers.
Jack L. (after enlarging his garden!) found about 100 tubers.
Alan H. (Our State magazine celebrity!) sent about 50 from his small garden - including some of his origination SADIE.
Buddy D. donated approximately 125 plants as well as another 350 tubers. (He also provided tubers for our Southern Heritage competition - Brian Killingsworth's originations "Creekside ..." Members could also purchase Brian's newest, unreleased tuber "Creekside Brantley" which was exposed at our show last fall.
We missed a few people and we found a few people: Susan K. & Ken Z. celebrated their birthdays with family and other friends - Kenny had a Dahlia Dance, where his Dancing friends bring their tubers - he divides them and they all take tubers home. Kelly D. was prepping the Grandbaby Celebration (Buddy D. was in trouble). Joe B. (Betty Anna's husband) is recuperating from eye surgery. Raymond T. has been gone several years - he made and donated the easels we use at the shows! Clyde H. was on crutches but he made it! And we have 3 new members, at least 1 of whom will be at Debbie R.'s for lasagna!
Mark your Calendars for Meeting Dates & Put our phone number in your cellphone - call us if you get lost on the way to a meeting - Deb H. is good at "talking you in". We had at least 2 members who missed the meeting today.
