In Clyde, NC (a short drive from Asheville, NC) A. L. Freedlander loved Dahlias. So much so, that his donation to Haywood Community College (HCC) stipulated a dahlia garden. For over 25 years, staff members Doyle Justice and now Tonya Nifong have overseen the care of 400 hills (2 plants each) with over 250 varieties. |

For the 2005 Annual Show, Carolinas Dahlia Society (CDS) hosted Bill McClaren, an internationally recognized author and dahlia originator. On a visit to the campus, Mr. McCLaren said that HCC was one of the first to order from Alpen Gardens, a commercial dahlia nursery he owned with his wife, and that he had always wanted to see this college. Haywood Community College and the Carolinas Dahlia Society (CDS) have created a lasting relationship as well. As any Dahlia grower knows, 800 plants produce a lot of tubers to be sorted, divided and culled before being replanted. CDS, as a group, volunteers each spring to help with this process – in 2005 almost 200 manhours. Viable tubers that don’t go back into the Freedlander Garden are donated to the CDS for sale to members and the public in May each year. In an effort to encourage new enthusiasts, CDS is considering donating tubers to schools for distribution to their students. The Annual Show in September will have a special Youth division for them to enter their blossoms.
