These photos were taken during the initial year of the Dahlia Trial Garden at the Village Green in Cashiers, NC. The Great Smoky Mountains Trial Garden is sponsored by the Carolinas Dahlia Society, the American Dahlia Society and the Town of Cashiers, NC. This is the only Dahlia Trial Garden in North America at an elevation of approximately 3200 feet. Katie L. and Buddy D. - local residents, members & senior judges of both the Carolinas Dahlia Society and the American Dahlia Society - share the responsibilities of the Garden. CDS members are asked to volunteer for Garden maintenance. Details are provided at the bottom of this page. The first two years of a trial garden (2007 and 2008 for this one) are considered probationary by the American Dahlia Society. While judged, new cultivars are not awarded any points from a probationary garden. The Garden is open to the public again in 2008 but we ask that you not enter the fenced area without a Society escort and that you do not cut blooms. For directions, click here. From July through October, Members meet at the Garden for fellowship mixed with routine garden tasks necessary
for the beauty and health of a Dahlia Garden. Buddy D. or Katie L. is available for continuity and to assist
new Dahlia growers with the specifics.
These meetings are on the first Saturday morning of each month at 10 a.m. or on the third Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
The dates for planting the Dahlia Trial Garden and for removing the tubers at the end of the season will be announced at a later date.
